May 8, 2012 Rachmaninoff Aleko and Tchaikovsky The Queen of Spades in Free Concerts Presented by Russian Opera Workshop Academy of Vocal Arts, June - July 2012 PHILADELPHIA, June-July, 2012: In its second summer season, Russian Opera Workshop will present free concerts of Rachmaninoff Aleko and Tchaikovsky The Queen of Spades (Pique Dame). All performances are in Russian with English supertitles and will take place at the Warden Theater at the Academy of Vocal Arts, 1920 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103. Participating artists arrive to Philadelphia from across the United States, Canada, Mexico and Russia. Selected by an audition process, the vocal artists will study opera roles and the Russian language, and sing in vocal master classes with leading voice coaches and conductors, before performing the Russian Romances recitals and Opera concerts for the public. Tuesday – Thursday, June 26-28 at 7:30 PM Sergei Rachmaninoff: Aleko, opera in concert With Russian Opera Workshop artists and small chorus, comprised of singers from Philadelphia choral groups. Ghenady Meirson, Music Director and Pianist. Monday, July 23 at 7:30 PM Russian Romances Concert With Russian Opera Workshop artists and Lecture on Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades given by American composer Daron Hagen. Tuesday – Thursday, July 24-26 at 7:30 PM Pyotr Tchaikovsky: The Queen of Spades, opera in concert With Russian Opera Workshop artists. Ghenady Meirson, Music Director and Pianist. FREE MASTER CLASSES 2012*: Thursday, June 7 at 1:00 PM Rachmaninoff Songs: collaborative piano/vocal master class with Mikael Eliasen, Chair Vocal Studies, Curtis Institute of Music. Friday, June 8 at 1:00 PM Rachmaninoff Songs: vocal master class with Benita Valente, a distinguished American soprano. Tuesday & Wednesday, July 17 & 18 at 1:00 PM Vocal master classes with William Stone, Voice Faculty, Academy of Vocal Arts. Thursday, July 19 at 1:00 PM Vocal master class with David Hayes, Music Director of the Philadelphia Singers. About Russian Opera Workshop Russian Opera Workshop is an independent summer training program for aspiring and professional opera singers. Founded in 2010 by Ghenady Meirson, faculty member at both Academy of Vocal Arts and Curtis Institute of Music, the program offers international opera singers an intense one-month Russian immersion program, culminating with free public concerts. Alumni Success Russian Opera Workshop 2011 alumni put newly acquired Eugene Onegin roles to work. Baritone Efrain Solis replaced an ailing Onegin in Pasadena, CA, immediately following the workshop in August 2011. Soprano Youngjoo An performed Tatyana in Opera Delaware Spring Series and is currently (Apr 27 - May 6, 2012) performing with Bel Cantati Opera along with fellow alum tenor Ryan Brock who is singing Lensky. Tenor John Viscardi performs Lensky with Opera Naples on May 17, 2012 and mezzo-soprano Cynthia Cook steps in to sing Olga with Vashon Opera in the state of Washingtonon May 18 & 20, 2012.
