Eugene Onegin inherits his uncle’s country estate and moves from St. Petersburg to the village. There he meets Tatyana, an impressionable young girl who instantly falls in love and expresses her feelings in a letter to him. Poor timing leads to Tatyana’s heartbreak. Bored with country life, Onegin finds himself in a misunderstanding with his best friend Lensky, which leads to a duel, and Lensky is killed. Distraught by unintended tragedy, Onegin leaves the village. Some years later, Onegin returns to St. Petersburg and discovers that Tatyana is now in high society and married. Onegin falls hopelessly in love with her, but Tatyana underscores the missed opportunity and remains true to her marriage vows. Tchaikovsky. Libretto by composer's brother Modest Tchaikovsky, and is based on a short story by Alexander Pushkin.
Obsessed with gambling, Herman regularly watches his friends play cards but himself never places bets. Overhearing a story about a secret of three winning cards, known only to an old Countess who is also the grandmother of Herman's love interest Liza, he now becomes obsessed with finding out the secret. Based on Pushkin's poem Poltava, Tchaikovsky's opera Mazepa (1884) focuses on a tragic love story between a young woman Maria and a much older Mazepa, a Ukrainian commander allied with Tsar Peter the Great of Russia. Abandoning her parents, Maria elopes with Mazepa, who also happens to be her godfather. In revenge for stealing Maria and bringing shame to the family, her father Kochubey warns Peter of Mazepa's secret plans to ally with Sweden against Russia. Peter does not believe the story, and turns over Kochubey to Mazepa for execution. Maria learns from her distraught mother Lyubov of upcoming execution, but it is too late to save her father. Guilt-ridden Maria loses her sanity. Siding with Sweden and losing the Poltava battle, Mazepa is on the run. He encounters insane Maria who doesn't recognize him. Being pursued again, Mazepa flees. Wandering Maria then encounters dying Andrei, her lovesick childhood friend. To avenge Kochubey family and his beloved Maria, Andrei challenged Mazepa who shot him in an earlier encounter. Maria mistakes Andrei for an abandoned child and sings a lullaby as he dies in her arms. (Synopsis by Russian Opera Workshop) Some years back, I met Galina Vishnevskaya when she was a visiting artist at the Curtis Institute of Music. We were preparing opera students for a concert performance of Eugene Onegin. Galina was a great Russian artist. In this recording she sings Joan of Arc aria from Maid of Orleans by Tchaikovsky. This is exceptional, a must share. Enjoy. - Ghena AUDITIONING NOW: June 2014 Workshop - "The Maid of Orleans" by Tchaikovsky - Philadelphia Premiere9/18/2013
