Conductor David Hayes returns to Russian Opera Workshop 2012

Conductor David Hayes will offer a vocal master class, working with participating Russian Opera Workshop singers on Tchaikovsky Pique Dame.

David Hayes is a conductor with an unusually broad range  of repertory, spanning the symphonic, oratorio/choral and operatic genres. Mr.  Hayes is currently the Music Director of The Philadelphia Singers (a professional vocal ensemble). He recently concluded a decade-long tenure on the  conducting staff of The Philadelphia Orchestra (with whom he made his  subscription debut in 2003 at the request of Wolfgang Sawallisch). 
  
In addition, Mr. Hayes is the Music Director of the Mannes Orchestra and Professor of Professional Practice at Mannes College The
New School for Music in New York  Cityand Staff Conductor of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra. He has also served as a cover conductor for the New York Philharmonic as well as for Sir Andre Previn on the Curtis Symphony Orchestra’s 1999 European Tour with Anne-Sophie Mutter. 

In the 2011-2012 Season with The Philadelphia Singers, Mr. Hayes leads subscription performances of Bach and the Mendelssohns along with a rare performance of Randall Thompson’s Requiem. In addition, he will  prepare The Philadelphia Singers Chorale for performances of Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe with Charles Dutoit and the Philadelphia Orchestra both in Philadelphiaand at Carnegie Hall, as well as Handel’s Messiah. This season, Mr. Hayes will also work with the West Chester University Concert Choir and Temple University Choir.
 
He will be leading performances of the Mannes Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York (including the New York Premiere of Elliott Carter's Flute Concerto); leading the Curtis 20/21 ensemble in a concert with Roberto Díaz as soloist in December; serving as lead faculty for the Chorus America National Choral/Orchestral Conducting Masterclass in New York in January 2012; leading a Curtis Opera Theatre production of Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi; and returning to the Berkshire Choral Festival for an concert of opera acts by Puccini, Verdi and Bizet.
 
Last Season, Mr. Hayes led performances of the Mannes Orchestra in Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall, New York and conducted a double-bill of Rossini’s Il Signor Bruschino and Poulenc’s Les Mamelles de Tirésias for the Curtis Opera Theatre. In May 2011, Mr. Hayes made his debut with the Artosphere Festival Orchestra at the WaltonArts
Centerin Fayetteville (AR) leading the finals concert of the Fulbright Piano Competition. In addition, Mr. Hayes continued his regular conducting duties with The Philadelphia Singers, the Mannes Orchestra, and the Curtis Symphony Orchestra.

In the 2009-2010 season, Mr. Hayes lead performances in Alice Tully Hall and the Academy of Musicin Philadelphia. Guest conducting  engagements during this season included leading the East Coast Premiere performances of Tan Dun’s TEA: A Mirror of Soul for the Opera Company of Philadelphiaand Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia for the Curtis Opera Theatre. 
 
Mr. Hayes’s guest conducting engagements over the past few seasons have included concerts with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, the Lancaster (PA) Symphony Orchestra, the Louisiana Philharmonic, The Relâche Ensemble, the Rutgers Orchestra, The Curtis Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, the Curtis Opera Theatre, the Opera Company of Philadelphia and a Kennedy Center debut with the Washington Chorus and Orchestra (which includes members of the National Symphony Orchestra).
 
Mr. Hayes has collaborated with some of the world’s finest soloists including: Roberto Diàz, Vladimir Feltsman, Haijing Fu, Evelyn Glennie, Gary Graffman, Hillary Hahn, Jennifer Koh, Meng-Chieh Liu, Alan Morrison, William Burden, Nancy Maultsby, Meredith Arwady and Rinat Shaham. In addition, Mr. Hayes has a strong commitment to nourishing contemporary music and frequently collaborates with composers. Among the notable composers with whom he has collaborated are: Tan Dun, Jennifer Higdon, Ezra Laderman, Sir James MacMillan, Paul Moravec, Bright Sheng, Christopher Theofanidis and Chen Yi, among many others. In the world of popular artists, Mr. Hayes has conducted concerts with Billy Joel, Blue Man Group and John Lithgow.
 
Mr. Hayes made his debut at the Verbier Festival with the Curtis Orchestra and has made several appearances with the Springfield (MA)
Symphony Orchestra at the Berkshire Choral Festival. In addition, Mr. Hayes and the Mannes Orchestra continue to make yearly appearances at the Mannes Contemporary Music Festival.
 
With The Philadelphia Singers, Mr. Hayes has conducted numerous critically acclaimed performances including: the Philadelphia Premieres of Morton Feldman’s Rothko Chapel, Steve Reich’s You Are  (Variations), Sir Michael Tippett’s A Child of Our Time and Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims (a work he first conducted with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra in Prague), Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Berlioz’s Requiem, Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Israel in Egypt and Solomon, all of the major choral works of J. S. Bach, Beethoven’s Mass in C Major and Missa Solemnis, Orff’s Carmina  Burana, Stravinsky’s Les Noces, Mozart’s Requiem and Mass in c minor. He has conducted World Premieres of Thomas Whitman’s
Babylon, Ezra Laderman’s Brotherly Love, Robert Capanna’s Day and several works written by Jennifer Higdon for The Philadelphia Singers. 
 
A native of the Boston area, Mr. Hayes studied conducting with Charles Bruck at the Pierre Monteux School and with Otto-Werner Mueller at
the Curtis Institute of Music where he received a Diploma in Orchestral Conducting and a BM in Musicology from the Hartt School of Music of the University of Hartford. Mr. Hayes served as a member of the Board of Directors of Chorus America (the national service organization for the choral arts) from 2000-2009 and is currently serving as Chair of its Professional Chorus Conductors Forum.
